Real-Time Ocean Data, for Everyone

Integral global partner Spoondrift, a San Francisco Bay-area startup aiming to improve community understanding of our oceans, has launched a low-cost, ocean wave-current tracker called Spotter that provides real-time data access anywhere, anytime.  The instrument may be used by anyone from coastal communities and fishermen, to university researchers, to offshore industry and governments.
According to Spoondrift CEO and oceanographer Tim Janssen, Spotter builds on years of research and combines design thinking with recent advances in ocean science and sensor technology.
The Spotter system consists of a globally connected, solar-powered wave-current buoy that is integrated into an online application for real-time data access. As soon as the device is turned on, data begins flowing to the dashboard; it’s that simple.
“Spotter truly revolutionizes the concept of ocean data collection. Its low price point and excellent data quality allow us to focus on data collection, analysis, and decision-making. Spotter provides true situational awareness,” said Integral principal ocean and environmental engineer, Craig Jones, Ph.D.
Integral has used the device to make sustainable wave energy more competitive, as part of research supported by the U.S. Department of Energy ARPA-E.
