Columbus—Site Investigation and Multimedia Remediation

By Todd Martin, P.E., Principal, Engineering

OUR CHALLENGE

Under a bankruptcy settlement, our client is responsible for cleanup and facilitation of redevelopment at a Superfund site in Columbus, Mississippi. Past operations resulted in a complex tapestry of soil, surface water, and sediment contamination.  Our client has a fiduciary responsibility to execute the work necessary to fully investigate and remediate the site within the limited funds available under the bankruptcy settlement.

OUR APPROACH

As a trusted advisor, Integral has collaborated with our client to develop and implement remedial actions that maximize benefits to the environment and the community given available funds. Our approach leverages a thorough understanding of site conditions into a remedial approach that minimizes long-term stewardship and maximizes redevelopment potential.

OUR IMPACT

Through technical excellence and clear communication, Integral has supported our client in navigating the Superfund process and advancing the site towards closure. To date, two operable units have been remediated, including offsite residential yards and stormwater drainage ditches impacted by past facility operations, and an area that represents nearly one third of the former facility.  Integral is now supporting the Trust in planning for the design and implementation of the remedy for the former plant area.
