Automated Extraction of ProUCL Output

By Alexandra Meyers, MPH, BCES, Senior Scientist

OUR CHALLENGE

ProUCL is a statistical software tool developed by EPA that Integral uses for environmental data statistics and risk assessment. However, the standardized format produced by the tool can be challenging for users to quickly summarize and complete additional data analytics. Manual extraction of the automated software outputs is a labor-intensive process and prone to error.

OUR APPROACH

Using the programming language R, we developed a ProUCL post-processing tool to extract pertinent statistical information from ProUCL outputs, including summary statistics, goodness-of-fit testing, upper confidence limits and associated distributions of the data set, and warnings generated by ProUCL.

Our tool organizes information into a tabular format in Excel to allow for data analytics and risk evaluations. It is written in a programming language familiar to many staff at Integral, which will help facilitate long-term adaptability of the tool. In addition, staff have the option to run the tool through a user-friendly interface rather than R directly.

OUR IMPACT

Integral is able to generate project cost savings due to increased efficiencies, allowing for rapid summarization of ProUCL outputs. It can be easily used and shared companywide without the need for specialized software, programming experience, or extensive training. This tool does not result in any additional cost to the client and demonstrates our commitment to delivering quality service and value to our clients.
