OUR CHALLENGE Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were detected in a potable water supply well. Meanwhile, the regulatory agency was contemplating drinking water standards for PFAS in the low parts-per-trillion range where existing treatment technologies were unproven. These uncertainties aside, our client sought an agreement with the affected municipality to treat the water to acceptable levels.
OUR APPROACH We efficiently vetted PFAS drinking water treatment technologies and successfully completed bench-scale treatability testing of granular activated carbon (GAC) and other key studies. The study results underpinned our design and state approval of accelerated implementation. Our design seamlessly integrated with the existing potable water treatment plant. We then oversaw the successful bidding, construction, and commissioning of the GAC system.
OUR IMPACT The PFAS treatment system has restored the well to public water supply use. We met the accelerated implementation timeframe and compliance with eventual treatment promulgated after construction. The system has been providing reliable, clean drinking water since 2017.
