Beach Preservation: Integral Presents on Coastal Adaptation at FSBPA Conference

By David L. Revell, Ph.D., Principal, Coastal Climate Risk and Resilience
Craig A. Jones, Ph.D., Managing Principal, Business Director, Marine, Coastal, Climate, and Technology Services
Cheryl J. Hapke, Ph.D., Senior Consultant
Matthew Jamieson, Project Scientist

Captiva is a low-lying barrier island along Florida’s coastline, which is vulnerable to flooding from storms and sea level rise. Integral developed a phased science-based approach to evaluate the vulnerabilities and risks to community infrastructure for adaptation planning.

Sea levels have been increasing over the last century, and increases are expected to accelerate over the coming decades, leaving low-lying communities vulnerable to flooding and inundation. Preserving coastlines involves proactive planning and new approaches. Integral Senior Consultant Cheryl Hapke, Ph.D., will present a decision support framework for improving the resilience of coastlines at the 35th annual National Conference on Beach Preservation Technology. Held on February 2–4, 2022, the conference is sponsored by the Florida Shore and Beach Preservation Association and will take place both in-person in St. Augustine, Florida, and virtually via Zoom.

Titled “Implementing a Model-based Coastal Adaptation Framework at Captiva, FL,” Dr. Hapke’s presentation summarizes the study Integral has undertaken at Captiva, Florida, to model 1, 2, and 4 feet of sea level rise and examine what areas of the coast are the most vulnerable and what infrastructure is at risk. After modeling and analysis were complete, Dr. Hapke worked closely with the community to select five priority areas for the 2 feet of sea level rise scenario and developed conceptual nature-based designs for adaptation. Other contributors are Integral’s coastal resilience director David Revell, Ph.D., along with Craig Jones, Ph.D., and Matthew Jamieson.

Dr. Hapke will be attending the event virtually. See the schedule below.
