Bio
Ms. Marianne Huizing is a senior consulting ecologist with more than 20 years of wildlife and ecological research experience. She focuses on special-status vertebrate species and wildlife-habitat relationships. Ms. Huizing has researched or surveyed for cottontails, squirrels, chipmunks, kangaroo rats, woodrats, and other small rodents in a variety of habitats: riparian, wetland, grassland, forest, and desert. She also has conducted avian research and surveys, including for nonbreeding long-billed and wintering shorebirds, wading birds, waterfowl, burrowing owls, northern harriers, and ferruginous hawks.
Ms. Huizing contributes wildlife and avian expertise to projects. She conducts surveys; leads efforts in capture and relocation programs for small mammals, including giant kangaroo rat, Tipton kangaroo rat, short-nosed kangaroo rat, and San Joaquin antelope squirrel; analyzes project impacts on wildlife; records data; and prepares reports and impact analyses.
Prior to joining Integral Consulting, Ms. Huizing was a senior wildlife ecologist at H. T. Harvey & Associates, where she worked for more than a decade.

Cherry Avenue Truck Climbing Lanes, Kern County, California — Served as designated biologist and team leader for preconstruction surveys, den monitoring, small-mammal trapping, and relocation efforts. Species targeted include the San Joaquin kit fox, giant kangaroo rat, Tipton kangaroo rat, and San Joaquin antelope squirrel. Prepared written reports to submit results to the client. Conducted protocol-level surveys for blunt-nosed leopard lizard as a Level I Surveyor under the supervision of a Level II Surveyor.
Route 5 Vehicle Detection System Installation Project: Small Animal Trapping, Kern, Kings, and Fresno Counties, California — Led a team that conducted protocol-level trapping surveys for the endangered giant kangaroo rat and Fresno kangaroo rat along 10 miles of I-5 in the southern San Joaquin Valley. Provided support in drafting the biological assessment (BA) and the Caltrans natural environment study (NES), which thoroughly analyzed the potential for the project to affect numerous sensitive wildlife species beyond the kangaroo rats, including San Joaquin kit fox, San Joaquin antelope squirrel, American badger, western mastiff bat, nesting migratory birds, burrowing owl, mountain plover, tricolored blackbird, blunt-nosed leopard lizard, western spadefoot, coast horned lizard, San Joaquin coachwhip, and California glossy snake.
Lost Hills Rubber Rehabilitation Project: Biological Assessment, Kings County, California — Served as designated biologist and team leader for preconstruction small-mammal trapping surveys for a California Department of Transportation project. California High-speed Rail Environmental Services (Locally-Generated Alternative Segment), Kern County, California — Conducted habitat assessments of geotechnical locations along the California High-Speed Rail locally-generated alternative segment for San Joaquin kit fox, burrowing owl, San Joaquin antelope squirrel, and Tipton kangaroo rat. Prepared the written reports for the habitat assessment and monitored during construction activities.
California High-speed Rail Environmental Services (Merced-Fresno), Madera, Merced, and Fresno Counties, California — As wildlife ecologist and project manager, provided support by assessing San Joaquin kit fox and giant kangaroo rat habitat for revisions to the BA and conducts special-status species surveys.
California High-speed Rail Environmental Services (Fowler-Madera), Madera and Fresno Counties, California — Served as designated biologist for San Joaquin kit fox and general biological monitor for High-Speed Rail CP1. Conducted surveys and general construction monitoring for sensitive biological resources including nesting migratory birds, Swainson’s hawk and other raptors, burrowing owl, and San Joaquin kit fox. Surveys also included habitat suitability assessments for bats, fairy shrimp, special-status plants, and presence of weeds.
Solar
Kings Road Solar Project, Kern County, California — Serves as project manager for conducting biological surveys in support of ITP/HCP permitting. Surveys focused on special-status species, including San Joaquin kit fox, giant kangaroo rat, burrowing owl, Swainson’s hawk, and Crotch’s bumble bee. Manages and conducts the trapping effort of San Joaquin kangaroo rats to determine presence of giant kangaroo rat. Prepares written technical reports including survey result reports, incidental take permit, and habitat conservation plan.
Azalea Hybrid Power Project, Kern County, California — Serves as designated biologist for giant kangaroo rat, designated surveyor for San Joaquin kit fox, and project manager for conducting burrow surveys. Conducted reconnaissance surveys for giant kangaroo rat, blunt-nosed leopard lizard, burrowing owl, and other sensitive species. Conducted preconstruction special-status surveys for San Joaquin kit fox, giant kangaroo rat, and burrowing owl. Oversaw potential San Joaquin kit fox den monitoring with remote cameras and excavation of the potential dens. Oversaw and participated in trapping, relocation, construction of artificial habitats for relocation, and precinct excavations for giant kangaroo rats. Managed and conducted monitoring during the construction phase. Project work also included surveys supporting vegetation and weed management, and residual dry matter (RDM) monitoring. Prepared written reports and provided support in working on the incidental take permit and habitat conservation plan.
Chalan Solar and Storage Project, Kern County, California — Served as designated biologist and project manager for leading the giant kangaroo rat trapping and relocation effort. Trained designated monitors in the construction of relocation enclosures and identification and handling of San Joaquin kangaroo rats. Oversaw the excavation of precincts. Also led a reconnaissance survey effort for burrowing owl, San Joaquin kit fox, and giant kangaroo rat over a 620-acre area for mitigation.
Alamo Springs Solar Project, Kings and Kern Counties, California — Co-led the design and trapping effort for giant kangaroo rat. Trapping effort included protocol-level trapping for San Joaquin kangaroo rats and included 3 weeks of trapping for giant kangaroo rat.
California Valley Solar Ranch, San Luis Obispo County, California — For more than a decade, has served as an approved designated biologist during the construction phase and operations. Conducted behavior and activity monitoring of active kit fox den during construction and conducted preconstruction surveys for San Joaquin kit fox dens in conjunction with giant kangaroo rat surveys. Conducted spotlighting for kit fox in the Carrizo Plain National Monument and mitigation lands. Monitored San Joquin kit fox dens and potential dens post-construction with trail cameras. Assisted with trapping San Joaquin kit fox to remove collars from a three-year radio telemetry study post-construction. Captured and relocated giant kangaroo rat. Tasks included participating in giant kangaroo rat surveys, identifying and mapping their precincts, and creating artificial habitats for relocated kangaroo rats.
Confidential Solar Project, San Bernardino County, California — Participated in avian and bat protection plan surveys as a wildlife ecologist at utility-scale solar electric generating system, which involved conducting surveys, managing data, and assisting with bird and bat identification.
California Department of Water Resources Pearblossom Solar Project Pre-Construction Support, Los Angeles County, California — Conducted small-mammal trapping survey and relocation. Tasks involved survey for small mammal burrows, identifying kangaroo rat burrows, identification of kangaroo rat species, assessment of relocation habitat, and relocation of all captured small mammals.
Wildwood Solar II Kangaroo Rat Trapping Study, Kern County, California — Served as assistant biologist for kangaroo rat trapping surveys. Conducted live trapping surveys and implemented impact avoidance measures for Tipton kangaroo rat in support of project construction activities.
Wildflower Solar Farm, Sacramento County, California — As project manager, provided support by scheduling monthly compliance monitoring and assisted the client in meeting the required conditions per the water quality permits.
Rosamond Central Solar Project, Kern County, California — Served as assistant project manager. Conducted reconnaissance and preconstruction surveys for burrowing owl, American badger, desert kit fox, and nesting birds, as well as desert kit fox and burrowing owl monitoring during construction.
PG&E General Habitat Conservation Plan Support, East Bay, San Joaquin Valley, and Sacramento Valley, California — Served as project manager supporting Pacific Gas & Electric with implementation of its San Joaquin Valley Operations and Maintenance habitat conservation plan (HCP). Services included conducting HCP covered species habitat suitability assessments and preparing baseline condition reports and long-term management plans for conservation easements or habitat preserves in the San Joaquin Valley, including a preserve in the Panoche Valley.
PG&E Panoche Land Management Plans, San Benito and Fresno Counties, California — Performed surveys for giant kangaroo rat precincts by walking transects spaced 30 meters, mapping giant kangaroo precincts, and identifying precincts as active or inactive.
Pelican’s Jaw Hybrid Solar Project, Kern County, California — Conducted a reconnaissance survey for special-status species, including burrowing owl, giant kangaroo rat, San Joaquin antelope squirrel, blunt-nosed leopard lizard, and San Joaquin kit fox. Also conducted spotlighting for kit fox at the Mendiburu parcels, an area of approximately 4,007 acres.
