Bio

Ms. Jade Heckman combines a background in environmental science with experience in public and environmental health to support healthier and safer environments. She has experience in industrial hygiene monitoring and reporting, exposure assessment, and hazard identification. She also has experience in environmental sampling and research, including field studies and community engagement on environmental health issues. Her professional interests are centered around the intersection of public health and environmental issues, particularly those related to occupational exposures, environmental contaminants, and climate change.

Relevant Experience

Industrial Hygiene and Exposure Science

Industrial Hygiene Program Development, Various Sites, Pennsylvania — Assisted with the development of a corporate industrial hygiene program by conducting hazard identification, creating sampling plans, sampling, and authoring exposure assessments to create objective quality evidence. Assisted in improving laboratory processes and equipment handling as well as conducting chemical inventories.

Litigation Support

TSCA Occupational Exposure Assessment, United States — Developed and maintained exposure assessment databases and reviewed field reports submitted in response to EPA test orders under Section 4 of TSCA on behalf of a chemical consortium group. Contributed to the development of an industrial hygiene report and ecotoxicology memorandum for use by EPA in the TSCA risk evaluation.

Indoor Air Quality Assessment, Columbus, Ohio — Assisted with residential mold sampling, including indoor air, outdoor air, and surface sampling; maintained detailed field notes and developed sampling result data tables and report for litigation use.

Occupational Compliance, Confidential Location — Provided support for expert witness involving airborne chemical exposures, regulation history and timeline, workplace control methods, historical monitoring data, and current literature. Contributed to risk communication and other litigation report materials.

Sampling

Environmental Sampling, East Palestine, Ohio — Conducted soil, tap water, and in-home air sampling at the homes of residents affected by a large transportation-related contaminant release to the environment as part of a large research project.

Environmental Health Investigations

Animal Bite Report Investigation, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Investigated public health reports related to animal bites and focused on rabies prevention. Collaborated with community members and health officials to obtain incident information and ensure the safety of the residents and animals involved. Educated involved parties on relevant laws and public health risks related to the incident.

Wildlife Monitoring

Wildlife Rehabilitation, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Assisted with the rehabilitation of native wildlife species. Investigated and treated common zoonotic diseases as well as human impacts on the health of wildlife.

Metals Toxicology and Assessment

Mercury Use in Artisanal Gold Mining, Suriname, South America — Researched the public and environmental health effects of the use of mercury in artisanal gold mining. Discussed the impacts of mining and mercury contamination with local village residents.
