Maui County Wetlands Overlay Mapping and GIS Modeling

Integral staff assisted the Maui County Department of Planning with mapping wetlands and other aquatic features across Maui, Molokai, and Lanai to meet a County Code amendment requiring identification of existing and potential future wetlands. A team of plant and wetland ecologists and GIS specialists developed a wetland determination model, then conducted field surveys to ground truth the results and supported public engagement to incorporate community feedback into the new map. The completed overlay, the first comprehensive wetlands mapping effort across the three islands, now helps guide land-use decisions and identifies areas that could serve as climate adaptation and mitigation sites.
