Bio

Mr. Zachery Gizicki is a senior restoration ecologist and senior ecologist in Integral’s San Francisco Bay Area office. He has more than 10 years of experience working in various habitats found in the United States. Mr. Gizicki is skilled at delineating wetland and riparian habitats and has experience mapping and monitoring a range of vegetation communities. He has experience statistically analyzing complex soil contamination data and evaluating soil horticultural suitability. He also has broad ecological knowledge, including plant and wildlife identification and soil evaluations. Mr. Gizicki is also a Certified Arborist.

He leads project teams, vegetation monitoring and report preparation, and analysis of project datasets. He also contributes to project permitting and design, provides construction monitoring, develops project recommendations, and directs contractors performing mitigation site maintenance. Mr. Gizicki has worked on dozens of projects serving clients in the public and private sector.

Prior to joining Integral Consulting, he was a senior restoration ecologist and project manager at H. T. Harvey & Associates where he worked for 7 years.

Ecological Restoration

BART Warm Springs Extension Project, Fremont, California — Monitored riparian vegetation, wetland vegetation, and hydrology, led preparation of annual monitoring reports, and provided contractor guidance.

South San Francisco Bay Shoreline Project, Santa Clara County, California — Collected and prepared soil samples for horticultural analysis for a design constraints study to inform ecotone construction. Prepared Temporary Impact Restoration Plan.

Bay Trail Connection at Ravenswood Open Space Preserve, San Mateo County, California — Oversaw implementation and managed 5 years of annual monitoring for a mitigation site for the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District’s project. Oversaw contractors during construction of high-tide refuge islands for federally endangered California Ridgway’s rail, coordinated native habitat planting, and documented as-built conditions.

Sunnyvale Water Pollution and Control Plant Expansion Project, Santa Clara County, California — Monitored willow riparian and diked marsh wetland vegetation. Prepared annual monitoring reports through project completion.

Tasman Corridor Wetland Mitigation Project, Santa Clara County, California — Managed the long-term monitoring for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority’s project. This includes vegetation and hydrology data collection, invasive plant monitoring and maintenance oversight, and annual report preparation.

San Francisquito Creek Flood Protection Project, Palo Alto, California — Served as a restoration ecologist for the project’s tidal salt marsh transition zone mitigation for the District and San Francisquito Creek Joint Powers Authority. Led the habitat monitoring of 7 acres of salt marsh transition zone revegetation and 5 high tide habitat refuge islands at the Faber Marsh in the Palo Alto Baylands. The project will improve high tide refuge habitat for California Ridgway’s rail and salt marsh harvest mouse in the face of sea level rise.

High-Tide Refuge Island Design, Construction, and Monitoring, San Francisco Bay Estuary, California — Serves as a restoration ecologist for the project for the California Coastal Conservancy. Work involves overseeing construction and monitoring refugia of 82 high-tide refuge islands in 13 tidal marsh ecosystems throughout the San Francisco Estuary’s baylands, to provide habitat for California Ridgway’s rail and salt marsh harvest mouse in the face of sea level rise.

Pond A4 Resilient Habitat Restoration Project, Santa Clara County, California — Led preparation of a Mitigation and Adaptive Management Plan and assisted with permit applications. Work involves ecological design assistance for construction of shallow water shorebird foraging habitat built from the import and beneficial reuse of Valley Water’s stream maintenance alluvial sediments. The design incorporates sea level rise adaptation elements.

Beneficial Reuse of Excavated Material for Tidal Marsh Restoration Project, Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, California — Serves as project manager for the ecological contaminant quality assurance component of VTA’s large-scale project. VTA and USFWS in cooperation with Valley Water propose to place excavated material from the BART Silicon Valley-Phase II Extension Project’s 5-mile tunnel and substations into several former salt productions ponds in the South San Francisco Bay to accelerate establishment of future tidal marsh restoration in the face of sea level rise. Directs the H. T. Harvey team’s assessment of the ecological contaminant suitability of up to 3 million cubic yards for placement in the former salt ponds, including bioassay testing.

Import Soil Quality Assurance, Alviso, California — Serves as quality assurance officer for the quality assurance project plan (QAPP) for the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project and the South San Francisco Bay Shoreline Project, which aims to restore a mix of tidal marsh and managed pond habitats in 15,100 acres of former salt ponds. In collaboration with USFWS, led the preparation and implementation of a RWQCB and Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC)-approved QAPP for import of clean fill for salt pond maintenance and large-scale ecotone/horizontal levee creation, using terrestrial subsoils imported via an innovative, free dirt market to the salt pond restoration project sites.

De-Pave Park Master Plan and Design, Alameda, California — Led historical soil contaminant review for the City of Alameda’s project along the San Francisco Bay shoreline adjacent to the former Alameda Point Naval Airfield. Prepared the soil handling plan for the ~21-acre urban ecological park which included creation of a mosaic of intertidal salt marsh, tidal marsh-upland transition zone, and rocky intertidal living shoreline habitats, with sea level rise adaptation components integrated with public access.

Saratoga Creek Hazard Tree Removal and Restoration Project, Santa Clara County, California — Served as project manager for Valley Water’s project. Led long-term monitoring and report preparation for a multi-phase riparian restoration effort to restore impacts associated with the removal of hazardous Eucalyptus trees along a 3,000-foot-long section of Saratoga Creek.

Stanford University Habitat Conservation Plan, California Red-Legged Frog Ponds and Riparian Restoration, Design and Permitting, Santa Clara County, California — Assisted with planning, design, and construction for California red-legged frog breeding pond creation and riparian restoration under the Stanford University Habitat Conservation Plan. Assists design-build team to construct 4 new CRLF breeding ponds and 0.5 acre of restored riparian habitat within a riparian corridor heavily impacted by prior quarry activities. Managed construction support monitoring and preparation of as-built report.

Coyote Ridge Preserve Project, Santa Clara County, California — Led the mapping and flagging effort for the avoidance of special-status smooth lessingia and Santa Clara Valley dudleya for the construction of public parking and trail systems at Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority’s Coyote Ridge.

Rancho Cañada de Pala Preserve Project, Santa Clara County, California — Provided botanical support for Valley Water in implementing a long-term habitat management plan for the Rancho Cañada de Pala Preserve, a 1,758-acre preserve near San Jose that serves as mitigation for Valley Water’s Stream Maintenance Program.

Winding Way Woodrat and Bushmallow Surveys, San Carlos, California — Served as the CDFW-approved biological monitor for the development of the Winding Way development project. Assisted with the relocation of four endangered San Francsico dusky-footed woodrat nests.
