Annaleise Conway to Present on Sunscreen and Coral Research at National Academies Public Meeting

By Annaleise Conway, Scientist

Integral assistant scientist Annaleise Conway will present on the toxicity of oxybenzone in sunscreen to corals at a public meeting sponsored by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) on August 5, 2021.

Ms. Conway will describe the results of her research “Investigating the Exposure and Toxicity of UV filters to Hard Corals,” conducted through the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Sciences.  Her presentation will begin at 4:25 p.m. Eastern time.

In addition to presentations on potential effects of UV filters in sunscreens, other meeting topics will include potential effects of sunscreens on humans and wastewater management near marine ecosystems in Hawaii.

The public meeting is one of several being held to collect information and perspectives on the environmental and human impact of sunscreen ingredients.  The meeting was organized by NASEM’s committee on Environmental Impact of Currently Marketed Sunscreens and Potential Human Impacts of Changes in Sunscreen Usage.
