Site Investigation

S&W Sawmill Site, Darby, Montana Managing an environmental assessment and remediation project at a former sawmill and wood treating facility. Chemicals of concern in the soil and groundwater include pentachlorophenol and dioxins and furans. Completed a groundwater fate and transport evaluation as part of a baseline human health and ecological risk assessment to determine site-specific cleanup goals protective of groundwater quality. This project is currently in the feasibility study phase to evaluate potential remedial options.
Perfluorochemical Site, Confidential Location Performed capture zone groundwater modeling (MODFLOW) to aid in the design and optimization of a pumping well treatment system.
Sulfolane Fate and Transport, Petroleum Refinery, Alaska Developed a groundwater model (MODFLOW) to describe the fate and transport of sulfolane in an alluvial aquifer in which groundwater flow is influenced by the presence of permafrost. Modeling goals included understanding the development of the current sulfolane groundwater plume and predicting future plume size and movement to help evaluate potential remedial options.
RI/FS for Heavy Metals in Groundwater, Former Smelter Site, Blackwell, Oklahoma Assisted in a feasibility study for groundwater remediation options at an abandoned zinc and copper smelter site in Oklahoma. Researched the cost estimates and details of an electron-donor injection system ex situ remedial design. Performed calculations to estimate concentrations of H2S gas emission from the water table, to the ground surface, and subsequently into the overlying air as a result of the subsurface microbial activity induced by the injection of an electron donor. The H2S estimates were used in conjunction with known potential health risks of human inhalation of H2S to modify the design of the electron-donor injection system.
RCRA Facility Investigation, Pulp and Paper Facility, Savannah, Georgia Studied distributions of metal concentrations in soils at a paper mill in Georgia. Researched historical soil surveys, maps, fill operations, and prior usage of the site. Statistics were used to examine how the metals were distributed. Performed sample tracking between field and laboratories for field sampling efforts.
RI/FS for Pesticides, Arsenic, and Volatile Organic Compounds in Groundwater, Pesticide Formulation Facility, Jacksonville, Florida Organized and participated in a groundwater, surface water, and soil sampling field effort on a Superfund site in Florida predominantly contaminated with pesticides. Wrote data reports. Developed a comprehensive numerical groundwater model (MODFLOW) for the purpose of testing various remediation options (pumping, hydraulic barriers, etc.) as part of a feasibility study. Compiled historical sediment data for the nearby contaminated creek, focusing on the spatial distribution of contaminants along the creek, to determine potential sources for the various constituents measured in the creek sediments.
Former Rayon Manufacturing Facility, Front Royal, Virginia Hydrologist for the feasibility study to evaluate remediation alternatives for waste disposal basins and related groundwater impacts at a former rayon manufacturing facility. The waste disposal basins hold gelatinous material with porewater high in carbon disulfide and dissolved metals. Analyzed hydrological field data (slug test, pump test, and infiltrometer) performed on basins of viscose wastes to determine hydraulic conductivities and transmissivities, ultimately to ascertain draining capabilities of the basins. Calculated a water balance for the basins to aid in the remediation feasibility study.
Nitrate Loading Evaluation, California Investigated nitrate loading to the groundwater from abandoned pig waste pits in California.
Surface Water Transport Modeling, Los Angeles, California Wrote a surface water advection-dispersion model to evaluate dispersion and dilution in a drainage channel for an oil and gas company.
Capture Zone Modeling, Oregon Simulated groundwater pumping schemes using EPA’s Wellhead Analytic Element Model to help design a remediation plan for an arsenic- and benzene-contaminated site in Oregon.
Former Smelter Site, Salida, Colorado Organized and participated in a soil sampling field effort at a historical smelter Superfund site in the Rocky Mountains to delineate the extent of windblown lead and arsenic contamination present on the ground surface from historical smelter activity. Wrote results into a design investigation report. Performed a groundwater transport and loading analysis to determine potential receptors of cadmium in the groundwater.
Arsenic Fate and Transport Modeling, Minnesota Performed SESOIL modeling to predict arsenic leachate concentrations in the soil under various conditions for a site previously contaminated by an arsenical pesticide manufacturer. The SESOIL modeling was part of a team groundwater modeling effort with other offices that were running PHREEQE and MODFLOW simulations for the site.
MTBE Fate and Transport Evaluation, Denver, Colorado Assisted in a study to evaluate methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) transport from a gas station to a Colorado river. The study goal was to estimate the concentration of MTBE expected to reach the riverbank. Risk assessors then used the estimates of MTBE concentrations to determine potential human health risks of the contaminated water.
Surface Water Flow Analyses, Michigan Estimated a flow index (90Q10) and groundwater/surface water dilution factors for an ecological risk assessment of a large stream in Michigan.
Mercury Air Emissions Modeling, Colorado Used the SCREEN3 air emissions model to estimate mercury air emissions from a coal-fired power plant in Colorado.
Legionella Bacterium Sampling, Denver, Colorado Sampled for legionella bacterium in the cooling tower system of an upscale condominium complex in downtown Denver.
Precipitation Data Analysis for Erosion Control Project, California Analyzed historical precipitation data as part of an erosion control project for a country club in California.
Soil Vapor Intrusion Modeling, Utah Used the Johnson & Ettinger soil vapor intrusion model to estimate vapor concentrations of trichloroethene (TCE) transported from the groundwater into the basement of a large retail building.
Phase II Environmental Site Assessment, Fort Collins, Colorado Designed and conducted a limited Phase II investigation of a vehicle maintenance facility for a concrete aggregate company.
Phase II Environmental Site Assessment, Lakewood, Colorado Managed a limited Phase II environmental site assessment at a former automobile dealership. Subsurface investigation included soil borings and soil analyses. Arranged a cleanout and pipe survey of the nondomestic wastewater collection system.
Phase II Environmental Site Assessment, Golden, Colorado Managed a limited Phase II environmental site assessment at a former automobile dealership to determine groundwater flow direction, and to investigate the site for potential groundwater and soil contamination.
Literature Review, Health and Environmental Effects of Ethanol in Flexible-Fuel Vehicles, American Petroleum Institute Completed an extensive literature review for the American Petroleum Institute on the health and environmental effects associated with the production and use of fuel ethanol in flexible-fuel vehicles.
Study on Remediation Costs for the Gasoline Additive MTBE, American Petroleum Institute Conducted a study for the American Petroleum Institute on the remediation costs associated with the gasoline additive MTBE.

Natural Resource Damage Assessment

Tetrachloroethene in Groundwater, New Mexico Providing expert witness technical support, including evaluating historical groundwater and soil gas fate and transport mechanisms, to determine potential sources and relative contributions of various parties to the present-day groundwater plume.
Centredale Manor Superfund Site, Rhode Island Provided expert witness technical support including historical data analysis related to potential contaminant sources, evaluation of fate and transport mechanisms, review of fact witness depositions, review of opposing experts’ reports and depositions, and compilation of information related to the operational history and timelines relevant to the case. Also managed a document repository database to support the project and legal teams. This effort was in support of the testifying expert’s report, rebuttal reports, and trial exhibits. (Emhart v. Unsaturated Zone Transport Analyses, California Supported legal counsel for farmers in a case involving alleged unsaturated zone transport of brine from oil production wastewater storage ponds onto neighboring agricultural property.
MTBE and Lead in Groundwater, Texas Analyzed data with respect to allegations of MTBE and lead in the groundwater and drinking water of a small community in Texas.
MTBE in Groundwater, Maryland Provided expert witness technical support, including historical data analysis, conceptual model development, and calculations, for an MTBE lawsuit against a Maryland service station.
Alleged Historical Human Exposures from an Oil Refinery, Missouri Reviewed historical reports and data, and performed numerous groundwater transport calculations and analyses in support of expert reports and testimony for a large historical refinery in Missouri. Examined potential exposures to contaminants via surface water, groundwater, and vapor intrusion. Culled through historical atmospheric data to determine predominant wind speeds and directions in relation to potential vapor exposures from the refinery.
NRDA, Perfluorochemicals, Confidential Location Provided technical support for NRDA litigation involving widespread impact of perfluorochemicals to public and private groundwater supplies, surface waters, sediments, and fish. Technical support included historical data analysis, evaluation of damages to resources, and review of potential restoration projects and associated costs for use in settlement discussions.
NRDA, Petroleum Refinery, Colorado Provided technical support to an industry client for NRDA settlement discussions and potential litigation involving alleged injuries to groundwater, waterfowl, aquatic and riparian habitat, and wetlands from a petroleum release. Managed a field effort to collect shadow samples of sediment and porewater during the pre-assessment phase. Evaluated the trustees’ scientific, economic, and methodological basis for their estimates of resource injuries and damages to aid in mediating a settlement.

Literature Review, Ethanol and tert-Butyl Alcohol in Groundwater, Worldwide Performed a literature review for a law firm on issues concerning ethanol and tert-butyl alcohol in groundwater.

Mining

Modeling of Surface Coal Mine Dewatering, North Dakota Assisted in a groundwater modeling effort of a mining site in North Dakota (MODFLOW). Evaluated the effects of drawdown and dewatering.
Baseline Studies for Coal Mine Permitting, North Dakota and Montana Compiled and reported surface water flow and quality data as part of baseline studies and monitoring efforts for two planned coal mines.
Well Certification for Coal Mine Permitting, North Dakota Assisted in a well certification program designed to identify and test all groundwater wells in the vicinity of a proposed coal mine to document baseline (pre-mining) well conditions.

Water Management

Source Water Vulnerability Study, Denver, Colorado Performed a comprehensive study of all current and potential sources of water for the Denver bottling plant operations of a beverage company. Presented findings to the client and select facility staff as part of companywide program to educate company employees on their available water resources, water use, and subsequent impact on the environment and potential stakeholders.
Surface Water Discharge Permitting, Coal Bed Methane Facility, Wyoming Managed surface water discharge permit renewals and modifications for a coal bed methane facility in Wyoming.
Water Balance Study, Oklahoma Assisted in a water balance study to assess the potential impact of groundwater withdrawals from a large area in Oklahoma.

Waste Management

Groundwater and Landfill Gas Studies, Casper, Wyoming Designed and performed a geophysical investigation to determine the depth of waste at an unlined balefill, and to estimate how much waste may be in contact with groundwater. Performed a direct push groundwater investigation utilizing hydropunch and membrane interface probe to define extent of groundwater contamination. Installed temporary gas probes to delineate the methane gas migration around the perimeter of the balefill. Performed landfill gas sampling and compared results to groundwater analytical data to evaluate the potential for the landfill gas to be contributing to the volatile organic compounds in the groundwater.
Hydrological Services, Pitkin County, Colorado Managed sampling and statistical analyses at an active landfill. Wrote annual reports evaluating the effectiveness of corrective measures in place in response to vinyl chloride contamination in groundwater.
Groundwater Support Services, Construction Debris Landfill, Denver, Colorado Managed sampling and statistical analyses at an active landfill. The landfill is situated in a sand and gravel pit permitted for construction and demolition debris.
