James Lape

Principal Environmental Scientist, Human Health Risk Assessor

Mr. Lape is an atmospheric scientist and risk assessor with more than 20 years of experience in the environmental science fields, working on behalf of both government and private clients. His academic training and professional career have included fate and transport modeling and evaluation of the potential health consequences of human exposures to air toxins in indoor air, ambient air, and confined spaces, for both routine emissions and accidental releases. In addition, he has provided expert testimony on air modeling in federal and state proceedings. His modeling experience for ambient environments includes investigating emissions from chemical and manufacturing sources, hazardous and municipal waste incinerators and landfills, power plants, DOE facilities, and Superfund sites. Mr. Lape has also evaluated air quality issues in indoor environments including soil, gas, and ambient air infiltration; volatile chemical releases from domestic use of contaminated groundwater; and air toxic emissions, including asbestos, from consumer products. In addition, he has extensive experience in the design and analysis of monitoring networks for meteorological parameters as well as for gases and particulates.

Mr. Lape is also experienced in all aspects of quantitative human health risk assessments, including fate and transport modeling, exposure assessment, risk characterization, and uncertainty analysis. He has also provided litigation support in the area of air toxins and risk assessment including strategic planning, state-of-knowledge evaluations, witness preparation, and trial exhibit development. In addition, Mr. Lape has been a principal investigator or project manager for human health risk assessments conducted as part of CERCLA, RCRA, state regulatory programs, and related litigation, as well as for evaluations of potential impacts on children’s health from exposure to chemicals in consumer products. This work has included providing risk communication to scientific and layperson audiences on behalf of government and private clients and serving as the technical lead in negotiations with regulatory agencies on behalf of private clients.
