Steven O. Helgen
Principal Geochemist
Mr. Steve Helgen is a consultant in geochemistry, hydrogeology, and environmental forensics. He has more than 15 years of experience in contaminant fate and transport, geochemical fingerprinting, and apportionment in complex, multiparty environmental disputes at industrial and mining sites. He has developed and published apportionment methods that have proven instrumental in settlement negotiations and at trial for a variety of industrial and mining clients. Mr. Helgen has successfully applied a number of geochemical forensic techniques used to identify sources and determine the timing and quantity of releases, and has provided expert testimony in both state and federal court. For the mining industry, Mr. Helgen has developed numerical models of reactive gas transport, sulfide oxidation, pit lake geochemistry, and metals behavior in stream sediments; assessed the fate and transport of acidic groundwater plumes; and designed and implemented materials characterization studies. His experience at industrial sites where organic compounds are present includes developing innovative remedial strategies, such as enhanced bioremediation of chlorinated solvents, assessing and modeling soil gas transport and indoor air vapor intrusion, isotopic studies, and natural resource damage assessment.
