Michael V. Ruby

Principal Scientist

Mr. Michael Ruby is an environmental chemist with 17 years of experience in site investigation and remediation, environmental chemistry, human health exposure analysis, and regulatory affairs. He specializes in designing and managing site investigations and studies to establish the transport and fate of organic and inorganic compounds in the environment. Mr. Ruby has directed multidisciplinary projects pertaining to soil, solid waste, surface water, and groundwater quality and on developing remedial strategies for such sites. These projects have been conducted under CERCLA, RCRA, and state-led programs.

Mr. Ruby’s environmental forensics work has focused on both metals and organic contaminants in the environment and has included cases for cost allocation, property transfer, and toxic tort suits. He has provided litigation support and expert witness services at mining and mineral processing sites, manufacturing sites, wood-treating sites, and salvage and supply yards. He has been called on to evaluate the timing, responsibility, causation, and harm resulting from releases of contaminants at these sites.

Mr. Ruby is an internationally recognized expert on the oral and dermal bioavailability of metals (arsenic, lead, and cadmium) and organic compounds (dioxins and PAHs) from soil. He has conducted extensive research on bioavailability issues and is widely published in peer-reviewed journals on this topic. Mr. Ruby served on the National Research Council’s Committee on Bioavailability of Contaminants in Soils and Sediments, which published a state-of-the-science review on bioavailability.

Mr. Ruby leads Integral’s alternative dispute resolution practice. In this capacity, he provides mediation and facilitation services to parties engaged in environmentally related conflict.
