Integral ecologist Jennifer Sampson will present “Bioaccumulation of Polychlorinated Dibenzo-p-dioxins and Dibenzofurans in Fish in an Estuarine System,” during a poster session at the 2010 Dioxin Conference to be held on September 12–17, 2010 in San Antonio, Texas. The poster will be presented as part of the Risk, Regulations, and Cleanup session on Thursday, September 16.
Ms. Sampson co-authored the paper with Integral scientists Mihai Aldea, Ph.D., and Dreas Nielsen. The paper investigates the relationships between the concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in sediment and water with those in fish tissue using a large, publicly available data set from the Houston Ship Channel system in Texas. Based on an evaluation of dioxin and furan signatures in each medium, and a related literature review, the presentation introduces a conceptual framework for understanding patterns of dioxin and furan bioaccumulation in fish tissue.
