Integral scientists Judi Durda and Jennifer Sampson presented papers at the Sediment Management Work Group (SMWG) Fall Sponsor Forum in Sarasota Springs, New York, on September 29–30, 2009.
Ms. Sampson presented a paper prepared with Betsy Day of Integral titled “Lower Duwamish Waterway Slip 4: An Example of Remediation Delays Caused by a Lack of Coordination between Upland Source Control and In-Water Remediation Programs.” Remediation of this early action site is currently on hold pending determination of whether stormwater sources pose a significant risk of recontamination. The presentation explores the source control process as it relates to risk management decisions and considerations for improving effectiveness of both.
Ms. Durda presented “A New Weight-of-Evidence Framework for Reaching Scientific Consensus to Support Risk Assessment and Risk Management,” building on a paper coauthored with Ann Bradley of Integral and Louis Brzuzy of Shell Oil. Ms. Durda shared information on a weight-of-evidence framework used to incorporate multiple lines of evidence and analyses, allowing stakeholders to reach consensus on the need and appropriateness of sediment management decisions. She also discussed how this approach can be applied to similar cases to facilitate understanding of multifaceted data and inform management decisions.
