As part of a commitment to helping pulp and paper clients reduce their environmental impacts, Integral has joined the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI), an independent nonprofit research institute that focuses on topics of interest to the forest products industry.
“Integral’s sustaining membership allows us to stay closely connected with NCASI’s technical advances. It also provides us opportunities to apply our interdisciplinary expertise to some of the most complex environmental matters facing the pulp and paper industry today.” says Dr. Russell Keenan, Integral Principal Toxicologist and Vice President. Dr. Keenan has been associated with NCASI for more than a decade and has published extensively on technical topics related to environmental risk assessment and toxicology.
Integral’s overall services to the pulp and paper industry include human health and ecological risk assessments, air emissions and transport modeling, product stewardship, and engineering and remediation design for pulp mill closure and cleanup. Our experts also provide peer review and rulemaking testimony for law firms or industrial clients. Projects have ranged from ecological risk assessment of creosote wood treating sites to preparing risk assessments of paper products for compliance with California’s Proposition 65, which requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in commercial products, or that are released into the environment.
Our staff also keeps current on the latest issues of concern to industry. Integral scientist Patrick Gwinn serves as the Maine Pulp and Paper Industry’s committee representative to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s (MEDEP) surface water ambient toxics technical advisory group. In this role, Mr. Gwinn advises MEDEP on the design and implementation of a scientifically valid monitoring program that determines the nature, scope, and severity of toxic contamination in the surface waters and fisheries of the state. The group also advises MEDEP on the implementation of the state’s dioxin monitoring program.
